A U-Haul truck tore through La Maida Street in North Hollywood over the weekend, dragging a massive tree branch that smashed into in an incident caught on video and described by witnesses as one of the dumbest things they had ever seen.
The Los Angeles Police Department said officers were called to the scene at approximately 10:30 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Lankershim Boulevard and La Maida Street for a traffic investigation.
"V1 (the U-Haul truck) traveling eastbound on La Maida Street, struck a very large tree branch, which ripped off and lodged itself between the truck and its trailer," police said in a statement to Storyful.
The branch remained wedged between the truck cab and its trailer as the driver continued eastbound. The massive limb scraped along the street, striking parked vehicles in its path.
Clark Sean Heisler, an aspiring musician living out of his car while pursuing a music career, was one of the victims. He told CBS Los Angeles he was sitting in his car when he saw the truck heading his way.
"I said, 'This girl ain't stopping.' She's causing devastation to all these cars," Heisler said. "I had to dodge it. I felt like a Ninja Turtle."
His Prius was totaled in the incident. Heisler told CBS Los Angeles that replacement roof panels are no longer manufactured for his vehicle and the car was worth around $3,000 before the crash. He has since launched a GoFundMe campaign to help replace his vehicle and find a safe place to stay.
Heisler also recorded video of the incident. He could be heard yelling at the driver after the truck came to a stop.
"What the f— lady!" Heisler shouted. "You couldn't tell? You just hit everybody's car down the street!"
Nate Bridges, a North Hollywood resident who witnessed the incident, said the U-Haul truck had large rearview mirrors on both sides.
"She has huge rearview mirrors on both sides, like, there's no way you couldn't see and feel," Bridges said. "It was a huge mistake, obviously. It was one of the dumbest things I've ever seen."
Bridges told CBS Los Angeles the driver, who has not been publicly identified, "seemed like she was having the worst day of her life."
The LAPD said no injuries were reported and no arrests were made. The incident appeared to be an accident, according to police.
CBS Los Angeles reached out to U-Haul for comment about the incident and the driver involved but had not yet heard back at press time.
Heisler, whose band is called Papercut Massacre, said he hoped the viral video would help people discover his music.
"I'm a musician, so I write songs and I want people to hear them," he said. "It's all about their well-being and avoiding this crazy world."
