The Regents fell 12-2 to South East at Legacy High School in South Gate. But head coach Robert Torres said the result mattered less than what the team accomplished to get there.
"The funny part about it is when I thought about this game, I really didn't care about the win or the loss," Torres said. "I cared about the experience that these ladies had."
Reseda entered the season as the No. 15 seed in the City Section. The team finished with a 13-9 record.
Torres has coached the program for two seasons. The softball team had not posted a winning record until his arrival. None of the 13 players on the roster play club sports. Many are multi-sport athletes who fill gaps across the Regents' athletic department.
"All I could think about was the effort and the fight we put in," catcher Jadira Umenzor said. "We pushed each other as teammates and we fight for each other. We are a family."
Shortstop Thereza Fuentes and catcher Jadira Umenzor led the lineup. Reseda averaged 19 runs per game during the regular season before its bats went quiet in the championship matchup.
Umenzor credited Torres with shaping her beyond the field. She has played for him over four years.
"He's been my coach the last four years and (Torres) has seen me in my lowest of lows and highest of highs," Umenzor said. "He's never put me down and he's always uplifted me. His (coaching) is something I've applied into my own academics and my personal life with my family. I appreciate him."
Fuentes is the only player on the team moving to the next level of competition. She will attend Glendale College next season and study nursing.
"This season has taught me to make connections and growing up with this sport, it really shows how important having a good environment around you is," Fuentes said.
Reseda has never won a CIF LA City Section title in softball. The program will look to build on this season's momentum.
Torres said he is "99% sure" he will return for another season.
According to the Los Angeles Times City Section final results, South East won the Division III championship. The full scoreboard from Friday's games also included Carson defeating Granada Hills 12-1 in the Open Division II final.
